When this homeowner reached out to Fowler Outdoor Co., they were dealing with a frustrating and increasingly common issue—soil and mulch continually washing down a steep bank on their property. Every heavy rain meant more erosion, more cleanup, and less stability in the landscape.
Our goal was simple: stop the erosion, stabilize the slope, and make the space look intentional and finished.
The Problem: Ongoing Erosion on a Sloped Bank
The existing bank had no real structural support, which allowed rainwater to carry mulch and soil downhill over time. Not only was this creating a maintenance headache, but it was also preventing the landscape from establishing healthy, lasting plant material.
Left untreated, erosion like this can quickly worsen—exposing roots, undermining nearby plantings, and creating bare, uneven ground that continues to degrade with each storm.
The Solution: A Natural Boulder Retaining Wall
To properly stabilize the slope, we installed a natural boulder retaining wall along the affected area.
Unlike a traditional block wall, boulder walls provide:
- Strong structural support for sloped areas
- A natural, organic look that blends into the landscape
- Excellent long-term durability with minimal maintenance
The boulders were carefully set and anchored to create a stable base that interrupts runoff and holds the soil in place. This immediately stopped the downhill movement of mulch and created a defined, usable planting area above the wall.
Bringing the Bank Back to Life: Plantings + Mulch
Once the structure was in place, we focused on restoring the visual appeal of the slope.
We installed a curated mix of plant material designed to:
- Help stabilize soil with root systems
- Thrive on a sloped grade with sun exposure
- Add texture, color, and year-round interest
Fresh mulch was then applied to finish the beds, helping retain moisture, suppress weeds, and complete the clean, polished look of the space.
Finishing Touch: Landscape Lighting at the Entrance
To elevate the curb appeal even further, we added landscape lighting at the entrance of the property.
This not only improves nighttime visibility and safety, but also highlights the new landscape features—bringing out the texture of the boulder wall and softly illuminating the plantings after dark.
The result is a welcoming, warm entryway that looks just as good at night as it does during the day.
The Final Result
What was once a constantly eroding, high-maintenance slope is now a stabilized, landscaped feature that enhances the property instead of detracting from it.
This project is a great example of how the right combination of hardscaping, planting, and lighting can completely transform a problem area into a functional and beautiful part of the yard.
